At Ellens Age”, the new film by Pia Marais, will be celebrating its world premiere at the 63rd International Film Festival Locarno (4th 14th August). After her debut “The Unpolished”, for which Marais won the Tiger Award in Rotterdam in 2007, this is the second collaboration between the South African-born director, Pandora Film (Claudia Steffen and Christoph Friedel), and the Filmstiftung NRW. In Locarno the film will be competing for the coveted Leopard.

In summer 2009, Pia Marais realised the screenplay she had written together with Horst Markgraf on 30 shooting days at locations including Cologne, Düsseldorf, Duisburg and Weeze in North Rhine-Westphalia. Other locations included Frankfurt and South Africa.

In her film, Pia Marais tells the story of stewardess Ellen, who end a relationship and subsequently becomes caught up in a maelstrom of events which finally take her to Africa. The title heroine is played by French actress Jeanne Balibar and Eva Löbau, Stefan Stern, Georg Friedrich, Julia Hummer, and Alexander Scheer can be seen in supporting roles. The Cologne distributor Real Fiction will be launching the film in German cinemas at the beginning of 2011. World distribution and sales will be in the hands of The Match Factory.

“At Ellens Age” was produced by the Cologne company Pandora Filmproduktion in collaboration with WDR (Andrea Hanke) and Arte (Georg Steinert). The Filmstiftung supported the production with 780,000 Euros.

Locarno has always been a good turf for films supported by the Filmstiftung NRW in the past. Sönke Wortmanns “The Miracle of Bern” won the audience award here, as did Eran Riklis German-Israeli coproduction “The Syrian Bride”. Burghart Klaußner won a Leopard in Locarno for his role in “The Man from the Embassy”, and in 2008, Malgosia Szumowska won the Silver Leopard as Best Director for “33 Scenes from Life”. In 2009, “Among Farmers Saviors in the Night” celebrated its world premiere in Locarno.
