Gerd Ruge Grant
The Gerd Ruge grant supports young documentary filmmakers in developing ambitious and socially relevant film projects.
Since 2002, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW has awarded the Gerd Ruge Grant to promote high-quality theatrical documentary films. The grant focuses on filmmakers who wish to explore socially relevant topics with journalistic precision, a distinctive artistic style, and an international perspective.
The grant is named after Gerd Ruge, who shaped German television journalism for decades as a journalist, foreign correspondent, and documentary filmmaker. In keeping with his spirit, the grant supports documentary projects that take a close look, ask critical questions, and open up new perspectives. In particular, projects involving intensive research, an investigative approach, or an international focus are given the necessary freedom for in-depth development.
The Film and Media Foundation NRW provides a total of up to 100,000 euros annually for the development and preparation of projects. Funding is provided as a grant; the project period is 18 months.
Please note that the submission deadline for projects this year has passed. The grant will be offered again in 2027.

The Selection Process
Once a year, a jury of experts from the fields of journalism and documentary film, with the participation of the Executive Director of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, decides on the awarding of the Gerd Ruge grant. After reviewing the applications submitted in full and on time, the projects are discussed in a joint jury meeting and the grant recipients are selected.
