Three of the films have been invited to screen in the Competition: Margarethe von Trotta's new feature film "Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey Into The Desert" with Vicky Krieps in the role of the writer and Ronald Zehrfeld as Max Frisch, and Christoph Hochhäusler's thriller "Till the End of the Night", both produced by Cologne’s Heimatfilm, as well as the tragic love story "Some Day We Will Tell Each Other Everything" by Emily Atef, produced
by ROW Pictures.
Petra Müller, CEO of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. "The film region of NRW will be presented in all its diversity at this year’s Berlinale with three Filmstiftung-backed productions in the Competition and twelve films in other sections of the festival. We would like to congratulate all the film teams and, in particular, the Cologne-based producers Bettina Brokemper and Melanie Andernach, who have each had two films selected to the Competition and Perspektive Deutsches Kino respectively. Discussion at the Berlinale Series Market, which the Filmstiftung has been supporting as a main partner since the very beginning, will focus once again on current industry trends and present trendsetting high-end series, including two projects backed by the Filmstiftung. We are looking forward to inspiring films and encounters and wish Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian as well as the invited film teams a successful Berlinale!"
Encounters and Berlinale Special
The documentary film "The Echo" by the Latin American director Tatiana Huezo, an international co-production by Cologne-based Match Factory Productions, will be screened in the Encounters competitive section. The black comedy "Seneca: On the Creation of Earthquakes" by Robert Schwentke with John Malkovich and Lilith Stangenberg, produced by Filmgalerie 451, is screening as a Berlinale Special. The same section will be presenting “The Craniometrist” by Lars Kraume. This highly topical colonialism drama by zero one film focuses on the first genocide in the 20th century in what is now Namibia.
The Panorama will be opening with the animated film "La Sirène" ("The Siren") by Sepideh Farsi, a production of Cologne’s TrickStudio Lutterbeck. Also screening in the Panorama are: Frauke Finsterwalder's new feature film "Sisi & I", produced by Walker+Worm Filmproduktion and starring Sandra Hüller and Susanne Wolff and the thriller "Inside" by Vasilis Katsoupis with Willem Dafoe, produced by Schiwago Film and MMC Movies Cologne, which was shot in Cologne’s MMC Studios in an amazing interplay of set design and virtual production.
Perspektive Deutsches Kino
Steffi Niederzoll’s documentary "Seven Winters in Tehran" is the opening film of Perspektive Deutsches Kino. The production by the Cologne-based Made in Germany Filmproduktion delivers a portrait of the reality of women’s lives in Iran. Made in Germany has a second film in the Perspektive sidebar "Lonely Oaks – Only Your Life Between" by Fabiana Fragale, Kilian Kuhlendahl and Jens Mühlhoff about the activist and filmmaker Steffen Meyn who died in the Hambach Forest. "Tehran Taboo" by Ali Soozandeh (Little Dream Entertainment), which had already celebrated its world premiere in Cannes in 2017, and Tom Tykwer's bestseller adaptation "A Hologram for the King" with Tom Hanks (X Filme Creative Pool) will be shown in "Perspektive Match", a cooperation between Perspektive Deutsches Kino, the German Film Academy and Berlinale Talents. "Perspektive Match" is a format bringing experienced filmmakers together with up-and-coming talents working in the same crafts for an artistic exchange.
Forum and Generation 14plus
The international co-production by Pandora Film "Mammalia" directed by Sebastian Mihăilescu will run in the Forum programme. The Generation 14plus sidebar will open with Sonja Heiss’ adaptation of the novel "When Will It Be Again Like It Never Was Before”, a Komplizen Film production with Laura Tonke and Devid Striesow.
Berlinale Series Market
This is now the ninth time the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW is serving as the main partner of the Berlinale Series Market.
