Call for Inspiring Stories: The Gerd Ruge Grant Enters a New Round
Starting May 1, it’s time once again to make way for powerful real-life stories. Documentary filmmakers across Germany are invited to submit their next theatrical projects for the prestigious Gerd Ruge grant. Ideas that examine, probe, and tell stories that move our society can be submitted through June 1. With a total budget of 100,000 euros and now in its 24th year, the Filmstiftung NRW grant is one of the most important sources of funding for documentary storytelling in cinema. It is aimed at writers and directors who have the courage to bring complex realities to light—with journalistic precision, an artistic vision, and an international perspective. In the spirit of journalist and documentary film pioneer Gerd Ruge, the grant stands for independent thinking, cosmopolitan research, and passionate storytelling. Funding is provided for projects that involve in-depth research, critical inquiry, and the exploration of new perspectives. In particular, projects that require an intensive development phase due to their investigative approach, global scope, or narrative depth find the necessary space here to flourish. The contact person for the Gerd Ruge grant—including for the preliminary consultation—is grant officer Nazgol Majlessi (nazgol.majlessi@filmstiftung.de).
Who can apply?
Eligible applicants are writers and directors whose primary residence is in Germany and who are developing a theatrical documentary film. Submissions from emerging documentary filmmakers receive special attention.
What is funded?
The grant is exclusively focused on the development and preparation of theatrical film projects. It provides the necessary leeway for the often crucial initial phase of a project—where ideas are refined, stories are deepened, and perspectives are developed. Among other things, it can cover research and travel expenses, legal consultation, and participation in national and international financing forums. The development grant is structured for a period of 18 months.
How does it work?
Here you’ll find the checklist, which must be completed—including a project overview—and sent to the funding officer. After the checklist has been approved, a mandatory consultation will take place at least one week before the submission deadline on June 1. Only then will access to the online application portal be granted. Appointment requests received too late cannot be considered for submission. Submissions must be made exclusively online. All documents must be received in full by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW by the submission deadline. The date of receipt is decisive; incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
What documents are required?
In addition to a cover letter to the jury (Writer’s/Director’s Note), applicants must submit a project description, a viewing link to a reference project directed by the applicant, a budget, the applicant’s filmography and resume, proof of rights acquisition, a statement confirming that this is a new project, and proof of primary residence in Germany.
