Clash of Realities 2018: International games conference from 12 to 14 November in Cologne

The ninth edition of the artistic-academic research conference Clash of Realities will open on Monday, 12 November. The conference, which is organised by the Cologne Game Lab of the University of Applied Sciences Cologne, runs until 14 November. Unique in Europe, the conference will be offering digital gamers an opportunity for interdsciplinary exchange and dialogue. Internationally renowned experts from science, research and industry wll discuss innovative trends in the development of digital games, their social perception as well as issues of media ethics. The conference is being funded by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, the City of Cologne and the regional government of NRW.
Top speakers will be gathering again in 2018 in Cologne. The keynote speakers include the managing editor of „Feminist Frequency“ Carolyn Petit, the journalist and video game critic Cara Ellison, the video game theoretician Jesper Juul, Christopher Power of the University of York, USA, Clara Fernández-Vara of the NYU Game Center as well as the psychology professor Christopher Ferguson. Tuesday, 13 November, will follow with the traditional Summit Day with lectures and workshops on such subjects as game development, game studies, media education, film & games, and diversity in games. The Main Conference Day will be held on Wednesday, 14 November. The same evening will see „Match Me If You Can!“ taking place at Wall 7 in Cologne for the third time. The Mediennetzwerk.NRW and the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW will host an interdisciplinary networking event for the media and creative industries in NRW.
Clash of Realities is organised by the University of Applied Sciences Cologne. Responsibility for the project’s concept lies with the Cologne Game Lab and the Institut für Medienforschung und Medienpädagogik of the University of Applied Sciences Cologne, the ifs – international filmschool cologne, the Institut für Medienkultur und Theater of the University of Cologne as well as Electronic Arts and AG Games.
The project sponsors are the University of Applied Sciences Cologne, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, the City of Cologne, the Prime-Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Electronic Arts. This year’s media partners are also the Mediennetzwerk.NRW and WDR COSMO.
