„In The Fade“ is the German Oscar candidate

  • Independent jury appointed by German Films takes decision
  • Fatih Akin’s film now in the running for the „Best Foreign Language Film“ category
  • Oscar nominations to follow on 23 January, Oscar ceremony on 4 March, 2018

On the road to the Oscar: the Filmstiftung-backed production „In The Fade“ by Fatih Akin is the German candidate for an Oscar nomination in the „Best Foreign Language Film“ category. This was announced in Munich on Thursday by an independent expert jury appointed by German Films. German Films will now submit the film as the German entry to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. „Mustang“ by Deniz Gamze Ergüven and „Toni Erdmann“ by Maren Ade had been previous Filmstiftung-backed films that were nominated for the Foreign Language Oscar in 2016 and 2017.

„Congratulations to Fatih Akin, bombero and the whole film team on „In The Fade“ for being nominated as the German candidate for the Oscar. The widely acclaimed world premiere at the Competition in Cannes and the Best Actress award for the lead actress Diane Kruger had already set an exclamation mark, and there are signs that the film could make it through to the five nominees. We will be keeping our fingers crossed!“, says Petra Müller, CEO of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. „,In The Fade‘ is now the third Filmstiftung-backed production in a row to be vieing for the coveted Foreign Language Oscar – a wonderful winning streak for feature films produced with support from the Filmstiftung!“

Jury motivation
"'In The Fade' is, at the same time, a drama, a court movie and a thriller. Fatih Akin relates law and justice, revenge and pain – with complexity, unsparingly, and with a stirring narrative. The film gives a human face to a political issue and unfolds with a ripple effect from which the audience cannot escape, from the first to the very last minute."

About „In The Fade

Diane Kruger, Dennis Moschitto and Numan Acar are cast in the lead roles for the film which had its world premiere at the film festival in Cannes. Diane Kruger was named Best Actress in Cannes for her performance. „In The Fade“ is a production by bombero international in co-production with Warner Bros.
