"Fallen Leaves": five nominations for the European Film Awards

The European Film Academy has revealed the nominations in the main categories of the 36th European Film Awards. Five nominations have gone to the Filmstiftung-backed production "Fallen Leaves". The drama by the director Aki Kaurismäki is competing in the categories for "European Film", "European Director" (Aki Kaurismäki), European Actress (Alma Pöysti), European Actor (JussiVatanen) and European Screenwriter (Aki Kaurismäki).

„Fallen Leaves“ was produced by Sputnik (FI) and Bufo (FI), in co-production with Cologne-based Pandora Film and the broadcasters  ZDF/Arte and Yle (FI). The Filmstiftung supported the film’s production and distribution with 110,000 Euros, additional funding came from the German Federal Film Fund (FFA) and the Finnish Film Foundation. Pandora Filmverleih released the drama in German cinemas on 14 September, 2023  and has already posted 134,000 admissions. World sales are being handled by The Match Factory.

„Fallen Leaves“ celebrated its world premiere in Cannes and won its Jury Prize. The film was subsequently honoured with the Audience Award at the 40th Filmfest München. „Fallen Leaves“ received the FIPRESCI Grand Prix 2023 for Best Film of the Year during the opening gala in San Sebastian in September.

The winners of the European Film Awards will be announced in Berlin on 9 December. Further information and a list of all the nominees can be found here.
