Festival de Cannes with funded production "September Says"
It was announced at this week’s press conference for the 77th Festival de Cannes (14 to 25 May, 2024) that the Filmstiftung-backed production "September Says" by Ariane Labed has been invited to screen in Un Certain Regard. The international co-production was produced on the German side by Cologne’s MFP whose films have been regularly receiving invitations to international A-list festivals for several years.
"September Says" centres on two teenage sisters September and Juli (Pascale Kann and Mia Tharia), who have an ambivalent relationship to one another. Actress-director Ariane Labed had already been in Cannes with her short film "Olla" and is now making her feature film debut with the adaptation of Daisy Johnson’s novel "Sisters". "September Says" is a Sackville (IRL) / Crybaby (UK) / MFP co-production in co-operation with Element (IRL) and the participation of broadcaster Arte/ZDF. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW supported the project with 200,000 Euros. The Match Factory is handling world sales.
Festival president Iris Knobloch and festival director Thierry Frémaux announced the selection again in Paris, broadcast as a live stream. Other sections such as Semaine de la Critique and Quinzaine des Cinéastes are yet to be announced. This year’s Un Certain Regard jury will be chaired by the Canadian director and actor Xavier Dolan. This year’s jury president is the director, actress and screenwriter Greta Gerwig whose "Barbie" was a global box-office success last year.
The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW in Cannes
The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW will have a presence again in the German Pavilion at Cannes’ Marché du Film by participating in the umbrella stand of Focus Germany – the amalgamation of the nine largest German regional film funds – and German Films. The German Pavilion is the meeting place and contact point for accredited visitors from the German and international film industry attending the film festival.
