FilmSchauPlätze NRW to Host Open-Air Cinema During Summer Break
Anyone looking to spend an extraordinary evening in North Rhine-Westphalia during the summer vacation should visit FilmSchauPlätze NRW. From July 24 to August 27, 2026, this event series organized by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW will feature unique open-air cinema screenings at iconic locations in six cities. What makes this tour special is that each film has a specific connection to its respective venue. A short film, along with a supporting program and culinary offerings from local partners, round out the experience for all generations. Admission is free.
The stops on the 28th edition of FilmSchauPlätze NRW are:
July 24: the Martinus Forum in Wevelinghoven on the Lower Rhine
August 2: Eicherhof Castle in Leichlingen near Leverkusen
August 7: the Humberghaus in Dingden on the Lower Rhine
August 15: the Bad Holzhausen estate watermill in Preußisch Oldendorf, Minden-Lübbecke district
August 23: the market square at the Old Town Hall in Rheinberg in the northwestern Ruhr region
August 27: The Josefsheim in Olsberg in the Sauerland region.
Walid Nakschbandi, Managing Director of the Film and Media Foundation NRW: “With the FilmSchauPlätze NRW, we’re bringing cinematic experiences directly to the regions of North Rhine-Westphalia—to town squares, gardens, parks, and historic buildings. It is precisely those places that one does not immediately associate with film that create a special atmosphere and make film culture accessible to all citizens throughout the state.”
Starting in early July, all information about the open-air cinema series will be published on the website www.filmschauplaetze.de.
