Golden Globe nomination for Filmstiftung-backed „In The Fade“ by Fatih Akin

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has announced that Fatih Akin's Filmstiftung-backed drama „In The Fade“ („Aus dem Nichts“) has been nominated in the „Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language“ category for the 2018 Golden Globe Awards. The 75th Golden Globe Awards will be held in Los Angeles on 7 January, 2018. The Golden Globes are regarded as key indicators for the Oscars which will be presented on 4 March, 2018. There were also nominations for „A Fantastic Woman“ by Sebastián Lelio, „First They Killed My Father“ by Angelina Jolie, „Loveless“ by Andrey Zvyagintsev and „The Square“ by Ruben Östlund. Last year had seen another Filmstiftung-backed production, Maren Ade’s „Toni Erdmann“, being nominated.

„Congratulations to Fatih Akin and Diane Kruger, bombero and the whole film crew!“, says Petra Müller, CEO of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. „We are very pleased about the Golden Globe nomination for 'In The Fade' and will be keeping our fingers crossed for the ceremony on 7 January – and naturally also for an Oscar nomination!“

In The Fadeis a production by bombero international in co-production with Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, Macassar Productions (F), Pathé (F) and corazón international. Fatih Akin’s thriller, which had its world premiere at the film festival in Cannes, centres on a woman’s love for her family beyond the grave. Her life suddenly implodes after the death of her husband and son in a bomb attack. The police arrest two suspects: a young neo-Nazi couple. The young woman wants justice – for her, there is no alternative. Diane Kruger, Dennis Moschitto and Numan Acar are cast in the lead roles. Diane Kruger was named Best Actress in Cannes for her performance. This year’s Bambi Awards also saw Diane Kruger and Fatih Akin presented with the „Special Prize of the Jury“ for „In The Fade“.

Filmstifung NRW backed the thriller, the main funder was Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, with other backing coming from the FFA, BKM and DFFF. The film was released in German cinemas on 23 November by Warner Bros.. The Cologne- based sales agent The Match Factory has already sold the film to almost 60 territories. „In The Fade“ is Germany’s candidate for the „Best Foreign Language Film“ Oscar.
