The road to the International Emmy Awards in New York will pass through Cologne again this year. This will now be the 12th time that a Semi-Final Round of Judging is held here. On 21 June, a jury of around 45 film and TV professionals will convene on behalf of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to decide on the candidates in five categories. In total, over 60 entries were submitted this year. The nominations in all 20 categories will be announced on 27 September. The 46th International Emmy Awards will take place in New York on 19 November. This will also be the 10th year in a row that NRW is being represented there by a delegation of TV professionals presented by the federal state of NRW, the LfM (Landesanstalt für Medien) and the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW.

„A gathering with a long tradition: the Semi-Final Judgings of the International Emmys in Cologne’s Marienburg are good for NRW’s television hub, but are also important for the International Emmy awards ceremony in New York in November“, says Petra Müller, CEO of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. „German TV professionals have brought home numerous International Emmys, thus showing the high quality and competitiveness of German television.“

The Semi-Final Round of Judgings is being supported in 2018 by the Prime-Minister of NRW, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, the Landesanstalt für Medien in NRW (LfM), Broadview TV, the FilmLounge and the MMC Studios. The German Academy ambassador and Cologne-based producer Leopold Hoesch (Broadview TV) is serving as the event’s host, together with ZDF, with the former Head of Drama of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), Piv Bernth (Apple Tree Production Denmark) attending as a guest of honour. Each year sees around 30 Semi-Final Judgings being held around the globe for decisions on the nominations in ten categories. Cologne has been a venue for the judgings since 2008.

The Filmstiftung, the federal state of NRW and the LfM have been cooperating with the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences since 2009 and have come to New York each year for a presentation of NRW. The internationalisation of the TV sector and the trend toward high-quality series have now further enhanced the position of the International Emmy Awards as a leading competitive platform in the field of television. Two German productions were nominated for the awards ceremony last November. „Familie Braun“, a co-production of Polyphon and ZDF, was a winner in the Best Short-Form Series category during the gala. The TV series „Club der Roten Bänder“ by Cologne-based Bantry Bay Productions received the International Emmy Kids Awards in the Series category in Cannes this April. The Filmstiftung-backed production „Generation War“ („Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter“) by Philipp Kadelbach won an International Emmy in the „Best TV Movie/Mini-Series“ category in 2014.
