NRW at the International Emmy World TV Festival and the International Emmy Awards
North Rhine-Westphalia is presenting itself as a long-standing partner and leading German TV location at the 53rd edition of the International Emmy Awards. The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in New York honors the world’s best television productions that were first broadcast outside the USA. In the run-up to the gala on November 24, the International Emmy World Television Festival will take place on November 22 and 23, where the industry will meet for networking and panel discussions. Academy President Bruce Paisner expects more than 600 festival visitors and over 1,000 guests at the awards ceremony.
Nominated! “Herrhausen – The Master of Money” and “In Fritzi’s Footsteps – What Was It Like in the GDR?” (Auf Fritzis Spuren – Wie war das so in der DDR?)
The nomination of the Filmstiftung-funded political thriller “Herrhausen – Der Herr des Geldes” (Herrhausen – The Master of Money) was recently received with great joy in North Rhine-Westphalia. The four-part series sheds light on the power entanglements between the state and the economy at the time of German reunification and was produced as a co-production by Sperl Film + Fernsehproduktion with ARD Degeto, among others. It was directed by Pia Strietmann based on screenplays by Thomas Wendrich, with Oliver Masucci playing the lead role as Alfred Herrhausen. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW supported the production with €1.1 million.
The second German production nominated with NRW involvement is the children’s documentary series “In Fritzi’s Footsteps – What Was It Like in the GDR?” (Auf Fritzis Spuren – Wie war das so in der DDR?) produced for WDR and MDR and nominated in the Kids Factual & Entertainment section.
NRW delegation with celebrities, politicians, producers, and nominees
Actress Mala Emde (“Köln 75”, among others) and actor Emilio Sakraya (“Rheingold”) represent North Rhine-Westphalia as prominent faces. Sakraya will also appear as a presenter at the awards ceremony on Monday evening and present the iEmmy in one category. The NRW delegation also includes producers Gabriela Sperl (Sperl Film) and Till Derenbach (Zeitsprung, for “Herrhausen”) as well as Academy ambassador Leopold Hoesch (Broadview).
Successful partnership with the International Emmys
The cooperation between the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has been in place for 17 years. In addition to the delegation visit to New York, the semi-final judging took place in August at Schloss Arff near Cologne, where the nominations for several categories were decided.
