Open call for the 10th Baumi Script Development Award

  • Development grant for outstanding international stories for the cinema

  • Applications until 20th October online at www.baumi-award.com

  • This year’s guest juror is the Oscar® winner Edward Berger

The Baumi Script Development Award, endowed with a grant of 20,000 Euros for the development of outstanding stories for the cinema, is now entering its 10th round. German and international authors are invited to submit applications for the script award at www.baumi-award.com up until 20 December, 2024.

Initiated in 2015 by Martina and Sandra Baumgartner, Pandora Film and the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, the award aims to facilitate free and independent script development and, at the same time, honour the memory of the film producer and distributor Karl "Baumi" Baumgartner.

In order to apply, at least one screenplay must have already been filmed and the submission be made together with a production company. An English-language synopsis (3 to max. of 5 pages) must be submitted. The award consists of a prize sculpture and prize money. The prize money is earmarked for a specific purpose.

A jury of the three "permanent" members of the award’s founders and an annually alternating guest juror will decide on the winning submission.

The Oscar® winner, writer-director Edward Berger is this year’s guest juror for the Baumi Award. His feature film ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ (2023) won four Oscars, including for Best International Feature Film. Edward Berger’s film received seven BAFTA Awards and took home a total of nine Lola statuettes from the German Film Awards. His debut feature film ‘Jack’ (2014) was invited to screen in the Berlinale’s Competition and received the German Film Award in Silver for Best Feature Film. He went on to direct such award-winning productions as ‘The Terror’ (2017), ‘Patrick Melrose’ (2018) and ‘Your Honour’ (2020). Edward Berger’s next feature film, ‘All My Loving’ (2019), was made in collaboration with Pandora Film and with support from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. The film had its world premiere at the 2019 Berlinale. His latest feature film ‘Conclave’ (2024) premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, followed by many other festival premieres including Toronto, London, and San Sebastian, and will open in German cinemas from 21 November, 2024.

Previous jury members were Pan Nalin (2023), Andreas Dresen (2022) Ildikó Enyedi (2021), Maren Ade (2020), Małgorzata Szumowska (2019), Bent Hamer (2018), Martina Gedeck (2017) Fatih Akin (2015), and Aki Kaurismäki (2016).

This year saw the 2021 Baumi Award winner  Dea Kulumbegashvili winning the Special Jury Award in Venice Film Festival’s Competition with her film „April“ (originally known as „Historia“). In addition, Sharbanoo Sadat (Baumi Award 2020) and Visar Morina (Baumi Award 2021) have now started shooting their winning projects.

The Award’s founders would like to extend their special thanks to Friederike Zeit for the design and making of the award sculpture, Katja Clos for creating the graphics and logo, and to Fritz Erler for the programming of the website.
