  • Marion Cotillard nominated for her role as the opera singer Ann DelGreco in Leos Carax’s musical "Annette“
  • Kristen Stewart nominated for her portrayal of Lady Di in Pablo Larraín’s "Spencer"
  • Both productions were also partly shot in NRW
  • 79th Golden Globe Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on 9 January, 2022

The nominations for the 2022 Golden Globe Awards have just been announced. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has nominated Marion Cotillard for her performance in Leos Carax’s "Annette" in the category "Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy" as well as Kristen Stewart in Pablo Larraíns' "Spencer" in the category "Motion Picture – Drama".

Marion Cotillard plays the female lead of Ann in the Filmstiftung-backed musical which opened the Festival de Cannes this summer. It is Cotillard’s fourth Golden Globe nomination; she won one Globe in 2008 for her role as Edith Piaf in "La Vie en Rose". She then went on to win the Oscar and the British Academy Film Award for her portrayal of Piaf.

Kristen Stewart portrays Lady Di in "Spencer" which celebrated its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September. Her performance had already wowed the critics there. In 2015, she became the first American actress to have won the French César film prize for her performance in Olivier Assayas' "Clouds of Sils Maria".

The Golden Globes ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on 9 January, 2022. The award is considered to be the most important indicator of the possible outcome for the Oscars which will be presented on 27 March, 2022.

"Congratulations to Marion Cotillard and Kristen Stewart! Both women are convincing in very different roles with great acting performances: unique, touching and outstanding," says Petra Müller, CEO of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. "We are delighted that two international co-productions, which were largely shot in North Rhine-Westphalia, have high hopes of winning this prestigious award. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for them as well as for the entire teams behind these exciting productions!"

About the films (link)
"Annette" is a production by Detailfilm in co-production with France’s CG Cinema and Belgium’s Wrong Men and Scope Pictures. The music score was provided by the 1980s legend Sparks. The film stars Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard and Simon Helberg. The story is set in Hollywood where everything revolves around just one subject: the relationship between the graceful opera singer Ann DelGreco and the coarse stand-up comedian Henry McHenry. Carax ("The Lovers of Pont Neuf") fulfils a childhood dream with "Annette": to have once directed a musical. The Filmstiftung NRW backed the international production with 550,000 Euros. The film’s shooting locations in NRW were in Vogelsang, Cologne, Münster, Mönchengladbach and at Düsseldorf Airport. Additional funding came from the German-French Mini-Traité, Eurimages and CNC. Alamode will be releasing the film in German cinemas on 16 December. Kinology is handling world sales.

"Spencer" is a production by Komplizen Film in co-production with Fabula Films and Shoebox Films. Neon and Topic Studios served as executive producers. The Oscar-nominated writer Steven Knight wrote the screenplay for the drama which had its world premiere at the 2021 Venice International Film Festival. In the lead role, Kristen Stewart plays  Princess Diana coming together with the British Royal Family on the Sandringham estate in 1991. The marriage between Diana and Prince Charles has long since cooled  and rumours about affairs and an impending separation are already doing the rounds. Sally Hawkins and Timothy Spall are also among the other cast members. César winner Claire Mathon was behind the camera. The film was shot in NRW at Schloss Nordkirchen in the district of Coesfeld as well as Dülmen. Additional funding came from MBB, HessenFilm und Medien, DFFF and FFA. "Spencer" will be released by DCM in German cinemas on 27 January, 2022. FilmNation Entertainment is the film’s sales agent.
