The KHM (Academy of Media Arts Cologne) film „Annunciation“ by Halit Ruhat Yildiz has now been nominated as one of the finalists in the Best Foreign Narrative Film category for a Student Oscar. This was announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The awards ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on 12 October. Last year even saw the Filmstiftung-backed German-Jordanian co-production „Ayny – My Second Eye“ by Ahmad Saleh winning the Gold Medal at the Student Oscars.

„Great news from Los Angeles: ,Annunciation‘ is now another KHM film making it to the list of nominees for the Student Oscar. Warmest congratulations to Halit Ruhat Yildiz and all the filmmakers at the KHM who worked on his project“, says Petra Müller, CEO of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. "Fingers crossed. This year may also see the Student Oscar coming to NRW again!“

About „Annunciation“: Ceren (33) wants to have a baby. After a boozy evening in bed with her husband Ali (33), she thinks she’s found the right moment to address the subject. But Ali’s reaction is cool. And what’s more – he reveals a secret from his past. Everything now changes for Ceren. „Annunciation“ is a production of the KHM. Another KHM production by Yana Ugrekelizdze (Animation) had made it along with „Annunciation“ to the semi-finals of this year’s Student Oscars.

Last year saw the German-Jordanian co-production „Ayny – My Second Eye“ by Ahmad Saleh being presented with a Gold Medal at the Student Oscars in the newly created category for Best Foreign Animation. „Ayny“ is Saleh’s graduation film at the KHM. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW supported the film via its graduation film funding programme with 18,000 Euros. Works by KHM students had received the Student Oscar on two occasions before Saleh. The Student Oscar in 1997 went to Raymond Boy’s „An Ordinary Mission“ („Ein einfacher Auftrag“) and was followed in 2008 by Reto Caffi with „On The Line“ („Auf der Strecke“). In 2012, the Student Oscar was won by Elmar Imanov, a graduate of the ifs internationale filmschule köln, for „The Swing Of The Coffin Maker“ („Die Schaukel des Sargmachers“).
