About the film

Bertolt Brecht, a theatre revolutionary, poet of the state, outsider, looks back on his life in 1956, the year of his death, in East Berlin: adolescent provocations in Augsburg during the First World War, early poetic and amorous flights of fancy in the Munich and Berlin of the 1920s, his escape from Hitler, returning from the US exile, followed by his later years caught in a dilemma between timeless classic and a failing GDR class fighter, an indefatigable free spirit and compromised artist.

¨Brecht¨ by the writer-director Heinrich Breloer is a production of Bavaria Fiction in co-production with Satel Film, Bavaria Filmproduktion Cologne, MIA Film (CZ) in association with the broadcasters WDR, BR, SWR, NDR and Arte. The cast includes Burghart Klaußner, Tom Schilling, Adele Neuhauser and Lou Strenger. The Filmstiftung backed the project with 1.1 million Euros. The two-part film is scheduled to be aired by ARD Das Erste in 2019.

The Berlin International Film Festival will be held from 7 – 17 February, 2019 and is one of the leading international film festivals.
