"Seneca: On the Creation of Earthquakes" by Robert Schwentke is a black comedy about the last days of the ancient philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca and the beginnings of Emperor Nero’s despotic regime in Ancient Rome. Seneca fails to live up to his own philosophical principles when, out of sheer boredom, his former student Nero forces him to commit suicide. Schwentke wrote the screenplay together with Matthew Wilder. John Malkovich, Tom Xander, Geraldine Chaplin, Louis Hofmann, Lilith Stangenberg, Samuel Finzi, Mary-Louise Parker, Andrew Koji, Julian Sands, Alexander Fehling, Wolfram Koch, Annika Meier and Samia Chancrin appeared in front of the camera in Germany and Morocco. Filmgalerie 451 produced the film in co-production with Gretchenfilm, Kasbah Films (MAR), ZDF/ARTE and dropkick pictures, and Weltkino is planning the German theatrical release on 23 March, 2023. Picture Tree International is handling world sales. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW supported the project with 200,000 Euros. Additional funding came from MFG and MBB, FFA, BKM and DFFF.
