Film und Medien Stiftung NRW"Fallen Leaves" by Aki Kaurismäki

"Fallen Leaves”, the 20th feature film by Aki Kaurismäki, is a tragicomedy about two lonely people who meet each other by chance one night in Helsinki and try to find their first, only and ultimate love of their lives. Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen are the film’s leads. Kaurismäki’s film pays tribute to Bresson, Ozu and Chaplin by telling a story about those things that can lead humanity to a future: a longing for love, solidarity, hope and respect for another human being, nature and everything living and dead. The film is inspired by the song “Les feuilles mortes” which was composed by Joseph Kosma with lyrics by Jacques Prévert. "Fallen Leaves" was produced by Sputnik (FI) and Bufo (FI) in co-production with Pandora Film and with participation from the broadcasters ZDF/Arte and YLE (FI). The Filmstiftung backed the film’s production and distribution with 110,000 Euros, additional funding came from the FFA and the Finnish Film Foundation. Pandora Filmverleih released the drama in German cinemas on 14 September, 2023. World sales are being handled by The Match Factory. "Fallen Leaves" had its world premiere in Cannes where it received the Jury Prize. The film was subsequently presented with the Audience Award at the 40th Filmfest München. "Fallen Leaves" will receive the FIPRESCI Grand Prix 2023 for Best Film of the Year during the opening gala at San Sebastián in September. In addition, the film is in the running for the Lux Audience Award and in the preselection for the European Film Awards.
