Each year, stars, artists and decision-makers from the world of film and media come together at the major festivals in Rotterdam, Berlin, Cannes, Toronto, Locarno and Venice. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW attends these events, presents productions from NRW and supports networking among the players.
As a part of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the CineMart invites directors and producers to pitch their projects to co-producers, funders, distributors and commissioning editors. Each year, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW organises the CineMart Lunch for participating producers as a co-host and partner of the CineMart and Rotterdam Lab.
The Berlin International Film Festival is the most important film festival in Germany and on an international level – with a strong presence by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. The NRW Reception, traditionally organised by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW with the Land of NRW, is regarded as being one of the Berlinale‘s top parties. Around 1,000 guests from the worlds of cinema, media, politics and business come to the NRW permanent representation in Berlin each year. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW provides information about the funding possibilities in NRW during the Berlinale at the umbrella stand of Focus Germany, the amalgamation of the German film funders, which is based at the European Film Market in the Martin Gropius Bau. As the main partner of the Drama Series Days, a joint initiative of the industry platforms of the European Film Market, Berlinale Co-Production Market and Berlinale Talents, the Film- und Medienstiftung gives the subject of TV series its own professional platform. In addition, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW is traditionally represented in the Berlinale‘s film programme with many of its supported productions from NRW.
The Film Festival de Cannes is one of the most significant film festivals worldwide. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW presents the film region of NRW there each year in the German Pavilion, the joint stand of Focus Germany, the amalgamation of seven German film funds, and German Films in the International Village of the Cannes festival.
The film industry travels to Ticino at the beginning of each August for the most important Swiss film festival, the Locarno Film Festival. Films supported by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW have already won numerous prizes here.
The Venice International Film Festival is regarded as the oldest existing film festival and, alongside Cannes and Berlin, is one of the internationally most important of its kind. The festival is part of the Biennale for contemporary art in Venice and awards the Golden Lion as Grand Prix each year. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW hosts its traditional reception on the Lido during the festival.
The Cologne-based sales company The Match Factory and the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW regularly host a dinner with film teams, distributors, producers and festival guests attending the Toronto International Film Festival, which is regarded as one of the world‘s most popular film festivals and a barometer for the forthcoming Oscar awards, in order to present films backed by NRW.
