"Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush" by director Andreas Dresen ("Gundermann") is a production by Cologne-based Pandora Film Produktion in co-production with Germany’s Iskremas and France’s Cinéma Defacto, with the participation of broadcasters NDR, rbb, BR, Radio Bremen, Arte and Arte France Cinéma. Laila Stieler wrote the script which is based on a true story. The fight for the release of her son Murat catapults the Turkish housewife Rabiye Kurnaz from her terraced house in Bremen straight into world politics and eventually all the way to the Supreme Court in Washington. At her side is the human rights lawyer Bernhard Docke, who fights together with her and becomes a friend for her. The production starring Meltem Kaptan and Alexander Scheer was largely shot in NRW. The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW backed the production with 1.2 million Euros. Additional support came from the DFFF, BKM, FFA, MBB, nordmedia and CNC. Pandora Film Verleih will release the film in German cinemas. World sales are being handled by Cologne-based The Match Factory.
