The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW supports writers, producers, directors, distributors and cinema owners, high-budget and low-budget productions as well as outstanding international films for television. In order to react in a flexible way to the needs of filmmakers and producers, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW supports almost all the phases of a film production: screenplay, project development, production and post-production, and even the distribution and sales of the final product. NRW@Berlinale 2012


(31 January 12) NRW is well represented as a film state at the 62nd International Film Festival Berlin (9th to 19th February): 21 films that were realized in or with participation by North Rhine-Westphalia have received an invitation to the official sections of the Berlinale this year. 18 of them were made with support from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. Excellent Chances of an Oscar: Nomination for Wim Wenders “Pina”


(24 January 12) Wim Wenders 3-D dance film “Pina” has been nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Documentary Film, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced at midday. “Pina” had previously made it onto a short list of the top 9 productions, from which the 5 works for the official nominations were finally selected.. Berlinale 2012: Hans-Christian Schmids New Film “Home for the Weekend” in Competition


(10 January 12) “Home for the Weekend”, the new film by Hans-Christian Schmid, will be experiencing its world premiere in the competition of this years 62nd Berlinale (February 9-19, 2012), Berlin International Film Festival announced today.The leading roles in this family drama based on the book by Bernd Lange are played by Lars Eidinger (“Everyone Else”), Corinna Harfouch (“Perfume”, “Downfall”), Ernst Stötzner (“Days to Come”), Sebastian Zimmler and Picco von Groote. NRW-Film in Panorama at Berlinale: “Elles” by Malgoska Szumowska


(4 January 12) Among the first films to be invited to the Panorama section of the 62nd International Film Festival Berlin (9th-19th February 2012) was Malgoska Szumowskas “Elles. The feature film is a German-French-Polish coproduction with participation by Zentropa International Cologne that has received 500,000 euros support from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. [...more]

European Film Awards for “Melancholia” and “Pina”


(15 November 11) Every year the 2,500 members of the European Film Academy (EFA) choose the best films and filmmakers for the European Film Award in a total of 17 categories. At yesterdays award ceremony in Berlin, Lars von TriersMelancholia” received three of the sought-after awards, among them the one for Best Film.Best Documentary Film was won by Wim Wenders 3-D production “Pina”.  [...more]


NRW at the International Emmys


(15 November 11) The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will be awarding its “International Emmys” to the worlds best TV programmes on 21st November. Since 2009 there has been cooperation between the Academy and the media state of NRW represented by the State of NRW, the Landesanstalt für Medien (LfM) and the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. [...more]


Dieter Kosslick to Receive Herbert Strate Prize 2011


(8 November 11) Director of the Berlinale, Dieter Kosslick, will receive the Herbert Strate Prize in Cologne on 16th November 2011. This has been decided by the jury of the Herbert Strate Prize, which this year consisted of the Filmstiftung CEO Petra Müller, cinema operator Margarete Papenhoff and Dr. Thomas Negele, chairman of the board at HDF Kino e.V.. [...more]


European Film Award: 14 Nominations for four Films with NRW Involvement

(28 July 11) The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW will be represented at the 68th International Film Festival Venice by a film for the cinema that has received support. “A Dangerous Method” by David Cronenberg, an international coproduction with a cast of prominent actors, will be celebrating its premiere at the Mostra Internazionale dArte Cinematografica, which takes place on the Lido from 31st August to 10th September.  [...more]


Filmstiftung NRW supports Tom Tykwer’s “Cloud Atlas” with one million euros


(19 June 11) The award committee of the  Film- und Medienstiftung NRW agreed one million euros support for the production “Cloud Atlas” in its final sitting before the summer break. Tom Tykwer (“Three”, “Run, Lola, Run”, “Perfume”) will be staging this remarkable German project in cooperation with  Andy and Lana Wachowski (“The Matrix”) in various locations in Germany and Europe, starting in late summer. Tykwer also wrote the screenplay for the film in cooperation with the two filmmakers.  [...more]


European Film Funding: Information Event for Producers


(19 June 11) In a programme continuing until 2013, the European Commission has set up a loan guarantee fund of eight million euros, which is intended to ease the access to bank loans for European producers. An information event on the topic will take place in the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW in Düsseldorf from 10 am – 1 pm on Wednesday, 20 July, organised in conjunction with MEDIA Antenne Düsseldorf.  [...more]

Filmstiftung NRW grants support to 22 low-budget productions


(8 June 11) The Filmstiftung NRW agreed to support 22 low-budget projects including seven young generation projects by Cologne film academies in its latest film support meeting, which took place last week in Dusseldorf. Total production support granted totals 498,500 Euros.  [...more]

(28 April 11) The new film by director Sebastian Dehnhardt and Cologne producer Leopold Hoesch featuring Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko was received with great enthusiasm and much applause at its world premiere in New York. Corinth Films have now acquired the North American rights.[...more]

Filmstiftung  NRW was founded in
1991 and is celebrating its 20th
anniversary this year.
(25 Jan 11) On Wednesday, 27th February 1991, the state of NRW and WDR – in the person of then Minister President Johannes Rau and WDR chairman Friedrich Nowottny - founded the Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. Adopting the motto “creating jobs with quality films” its aim was to help bring forward the structural changes in North Rhine-Westphalia by developing a strong film and media industry. With enduring success: today North Rhine-Westphalia is one of Europe’s leading media locations, with a total of 373,000 jobs, 67,000 companies and a turnover of 112 billion euros.[...more]
